Baby wake windows by age, explained

A wake window is how long your baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps. It grows from roughly 45 minutes at birth to 4–6 hours by 18 months. The right window is the one your own baby shows you, not the one on a chart.

Most sleep advice arrives as a schedule: nap at 9, nap at 1, bed at 7. Schedules break the moment a nap runs short, and then the whole day feels like a failure. Wake windows are the more forgiving version of the same idea — instead of fixing clock times, you fix how long your baby is awake between sleeps and let the day float.

What a wake window actually is

The window starts the moment your baby wakes and ends the moment they fall asleep again. Everything in between counts: the feed, the nappy change, the tummy time, the walk to the shops, and the twenty minutes of winding down before the nap.

That last part is the one most often forgotten. If your baby’s window is 90 minutes and the wind-down takes 15, you are starting the wind-down at 75 minutes, not at 90. Parents who feel they are always ten minutes late to the nap are usually measuring to the wrong endpoint.

Underneath it is sleep pressure — the drive to sleep that accumulates while a baby is awake. Newborns accumulate it very quickly and dissipate it quickly too, which is why their days are a rapid cycle of short sleeps. As the system matures, pressure builds more slowly, the windows lengthen, and sleep consolidates into fewer, longer blocks — which is what drives the nap schedule changing by age.

Wake windows by age

Treat these as ranges, not targets. Two healthy babies the same age can sit at opposite ends of the same row and both be entirely normal.

Wake windows lengthen from about an hour at birth to five or six by the second year — and the ranges widen as they go, which is why an older baby’s day is easier to read from their signals than from a chart.

The total-sleep column follows the ranges the American Academy of Pediatrics publishes for each age band. It is worth a glance as a sanity check: if your wake windows are producing far less total sleep than the range, something in the day needs adjusting even if each individual window looks reasonable.

The last window of the day — between the final nap and bedtime — is usually the longest, and it is the one most worth getting right. A baby who has been up for two hours before bed will be much harder to settle than one who has been up for one.

Wake windows month by month

The bands above are the map. These are the answers to the question as it is actually asked, at 2pm, about a specific baby who is a specific number of months old.

Wake window at 2 months

Sixty to ninety minutes, across four or five naps. Two-month-olds tire fast and show it clearly, which makes this the easiest age to read cues rather than a clock.

Wake window at 3 months

Seventy-five minutes to two hours. The day is still irregular — a 40-minute nap followed by a two-hour one is normal at three months and not a schedule failing.

Wake window at 4 months

Ninety minutes to two hours, on three or four naps. This is where the 4-month sleep regression usually lands, so short naps here are more often about sleep cycles maturing than about the window being wrong. Shorten by 15 minutes before concluding anything.

Wake window at 5 months

Two to two and a half hours. The fourth catnap is usually gone or going, which makes the last window of the day noticeably longer than it was a month ago.

Wake window at 6 months

Two to two and a half hours, on three naps for most babies and two for some. Both are normal at six months — what matters is total sleep in 24 hours and whether bedtime lands where you want it.

Wake window at 7 months

Two and a half to three hours. Seven months is the front edge of the three-to-two nap transition, so a third nap that is suddenly hard to fit is a signal rather than a problem.

Wake window at 8 months

Two and a half to three hours, on two naps for most. Separation awareness often arrives here, which lengthens the settle without lengthening the window — the two are easy to confuse.

Wake window at 9 months

Two and a half to three and a half hours. By nine months the two-nap day is usually settled, and the first window of the morning is reliably the shortest of the three.

Wake window at 10 months

Three to three and a half hours. Nap refusal around now is much more often a window that has outgrown its length than a nap that needs dropping — ten months is early for one nap.

Wake window at 12 months

Three to four hours, still on two naps. Twelve months is early for a single nap, and the 12-month regression makes it look like time to drop one when it usually is not.

Wake window at 15 months

Four to six hours, in the middle of the two-to-one transition. Many toddlers alternate for a few weeks: one nap on days that started early, two on days that did not.

Wake window at 18 months

Five to six hours either side of a single midday nap. From here the useful question stops being how long between naps and becomes how long before bed.

Does a short nap reset the window?

Partly, and the honest arithmetic matters more than a yes or a no. Sleep discharges sleep pressure in proportion to its length, so a 15-minute nap in the car buys a fraction of the window a full nap would.

What that means in practice:

  • Under about 20 minutes — a partial reset. Expect the next window to run around two-thirds of its usual length rather than the full one.
  • One full cycle, 30 to 45 minutes — most of a reset for a nap earlier in the day, less of one for the last nap before bed.
  • Over an hour — a full reset, and the window afterwards can be the usual length or slightly longer.

Where the nap happened does not change this. A nap in a pram, a car seat or on you resets the window the same way a nap in a cot does — it is the sleep that discharges the pressure, not the surface. A micro-sleep during a feed counts too, which is why a baby who dozed for five minutes on the breast is sometimes strangely hard to settle 20 minutes later.

How many naps go with each stage

Nap count and wake window are the same question asked from opposite ends. If you know the window, the number of naps falls out of it; if you are trying to hit a nap count, you are really trying to hit a window.

Transitions between nap counts are the messy part. They do not happen on a birthday — they happen when the old structure stops working, usually across two or three weeks of an increasingly refused nap.

  • 4 to 3 naps, around 4–5 months. The fourth catnap becomes hard to fit before bedtime.
  • 3 to 2 naps, around 7–9 months. The third nap starts pushing bedtime past where you want it.
  • 2 to 1 nap, around 13–18 months. The morning nap starts stealing from the afternoon one; the usual fix is to shift the single nap later, towards midday.
  • 1 to 0 naps, anywhere from 2 to 5 years, and rarely cleanly. Many children need quiet time without sleep for a long stretch before they stop entirely.

The signal to drop a nap is not age. It is a nap consistently refused for a fortnight, or one only achievable by pushing bedtime later than you can live with.

Reading tired cues instead of the clock

The chart tells you roughly when to start looking. Your baby tells you when to act. Tired cues arrive in a rough order, and the goal is to catch the early ones — by the time the late ones show up, the easy window has closed.

Early cues — this is the moment

  • A glazed, unfocused stare, or turning away from you
  • Slower movements, less interest in a toy they liked a minute ago
  • Red eyebrows, or a faint red line above the eyes
  • The first yawn

Late cues — you have overshot

  • Arching, back-stiffening, batting at their own face
  • Frantic feeding that does not settle them
  • Crying that escalates rather than winds down

Cues are easier to read in the first weeks than later. Around four months many babies become so interested in the room that they stop showing obvious signs — this is where the chart earns its place, as a prompt to start the wind-down before the cues appear at all.

When the window runs too long

Overtiredness is counterintuitive: the further past the window a baby goes, the harder sleep becomes. As sleep pressure overshoots, cortisol and adrenaline rise to keep the baby going, and those are precisely the wrong chemicals for falling asleep.

What it looks like:

  • A long, effortful settle — 20 or 30 minutes of fighting
  • Waking after 30 to 45 minutes, grizzly and clearly not finished
  • A second wind at bedtime — suddenly hilarious and full of energy
  • More frequent night waking than usual

The fix is almost always to move earlier rather than later. Take 15 minutes off the next window and hold it there for a few days. Fifteen minutes sounds too small to matter, and usually is not.

When the window is too short

Less common, but real, and easy to mistake for overtiredness because both produce a short nap. The difference is the mood on waking.

Undershooting is most common when parents adopt a chart written for a younger age, or after a rough night when the instinct is to get the baby back down as fast as possible. A baby who slept badly overnight often needs a shorter first window and a normal-length second one, rather than a compressed day throughout.

Why the ranges are so wide

Sleep pressure builds at different rates, and a lot moves the number:

  • Prematurity. Windows tend to track adjusted age rather than birth age for the first year or so.
  • Temperament. Some babies are simply harder to tire; some are easily overstimulated.
  • Daylight and activity. A morning outdoors reliably changes the afternoon.
  • New skills. A baby learning to roll, crawl or pull to stand often needs shorter windows for a fortnight, then snaps back.
  • Time of day. The first window of the morning is nearly always the shortest, the last before bed the longest.

This is why a printed chart stops being useful after the first week or two. What you actually need is your own baby’s pattern, and that only appears once you have a few days of real data to look at.

When the usual windows stop applying

Several situations move the number enough that the chart stops being the right reference for a while. None of them are problems to solve — they are periods to ride out on shorter windows.

  • Prematurity. For roughly the first year, windows track adjusted age — age from the due date rather than the birth date. A baby born two months early at six months old is usually working on four-month windows, and expecting six-month ones produces a permanently overtired baby.
  • Illness and teething. Both shorten windows, often by 20 or 30 minutes, and both raise total sleep need. Follow the shorter windows while it lasts; they go back on their own within days of the child feeling better.
  • A bad night. The instinct is to compress the whole day. What usually works better is a shorter first window and normal-length ones after it, so the day is rescued early rather than run at a deficit throughout.
  • A new skill. Rolling, crawling, pulling to stand and walking each cost about a fortnight of shorter windows before they snap back.
  • Travel and clock changes. Work in windows rather than local time for the first few days: the day rebuilds itself from whenever the child woke, which is exactly the problem a fixed schedule cannot handle.
  • Starting nursery. Nursery days usually produce shorter, lighter naps than home days. Expect the last window to need shortening and bedtime to move earlier on those days for the first few weeks.

Building the day around windows

Once you are working in windows rather than clock times, the day assembles itself from the morning wake-up. Waking at 6:45 with a two-hour window puts the first nap around 8:45, and everything downstream shifts with it.

Three habits make this work in practice:

  • Anchor the morning. Waking within about the same half-hour each day keeps the rest of the day predictable. This matters more than any individual nap.
  • Cap the late nap. If a late-afternoon nap runs long, bedtime moves and the night suffers. Waking a baby is allowed.
  • Protect the last window. Adjust the earlier ones so the pre-bed stretch lands where you want it, rather than defending a fixed bedtime and letting the window stretch.

When to speak to someone

Wake windows are a comfort tool, not a diagnostic. Speak to your paediatrician or health visitor if your baby is persistently difficult to rouse, if sleep changes suddenly alongside feeding or weight changes, if they snore or seem to pause in their breathing, or if your baby’s sleep is causing you distress. Trust that instinct over any chart, including this one.
